Scribble Papers

Scribble Papers

Let’s create some unique papers to add to our collage fodder! These “scribble papers” are so much fun to make and they make it easy to add pattern, repetition, and markmaking to your collages as you create them.

Collage art thrives on diversity, texture, and the unexpected interplay of elements. One way to inject uniqueness and a personal touch into your collages is through “Scribble Papers” – custom-made papers adorned with repetitive marks using paint, ink, markers, and more. These handcrafted papers not only enrich your artistic arsenal but also provide an endless source of inspiration. Here’s a guide on how to create and use Scribble Papers in your collage work.

MATERIALS:

  1. Papers: Wet strength tissue paper, old book pages, black cardstock, drawing paper, rice paper, and any other paper with varying textures and strengths.
  2. Paints: Acrylics, watercolors, gouache.
  3. Inks: India ink, calligraphy ink, alcohol ink, acrylic ink.
  4. Markers: Permanent markers, water-based markers, paint markers.
  5. Other markmaking items: crayons, pastels, charcoal, pencils, pens, white out (correction fluid) pen, etc.
  6. Tools: Brushes, sponges, stencils, stamps, brayers.
  7. Miscellaneous: Old credit cards or palette knives for scraping, bubble wrap for texture, and any other markmaking tools you have on hand.

GET STARTED

  1. Set Up Your Workspace: Protect your surface with a silicone mat or kraft paper. Arrange your materials within easy reach.
  2. Choose Your Papers: Start with a variety of papers to see how different mediums react to them. Wet strength tissue paper is excellent for its durability and translucent quality, adding a delicate layer to your collages.
  3. Start Scribbling:

   – Paint: Dilute your acrylics or watercolors and use broad strokes or splatters. For a more textured effect, use a sponge or stamp. Allow the layers to dry in between to prevent muddying your colors.

   – Ink: Experiment with dripping, splattering, or using a brush to create fine lines. Alcohol ink on glossy surfaces can create vibrant, unexpected patterns.

   – Markers/pens/crayons/pencils: Draw repetitive marks, patterns, or doodles. Use different tip sizes for variety. Permanent markers work well on most surfaces, while water-based markers can be blended or smudged for softer effects.

USING SCRIBBLE PAPERS IN YOUR COLLAGE

  1. Backgrounds: Use larger pieces as backgrounds to set the tone for your collage. The repetitive marks create a dynamic base that can be built upon.
  2. Focal Points: Highlight sections of your Scribble Papers that have particularly interesting patterns or colors as focal points.
  3. Layers: Overlap different Scribble Papers to create a rich, textured look. The transparency of wet strength tissue paper can reveal underlying layers subtly.
  4. Accents: Use smaller pieces to accentuate details in your collage. A touch of bright color or an intricate pattern can draw the eye to specific areas.
  5. Contrast and Harmony: Balance bold, dark marks with softer, lighter ones. Use contrasting colors to make certain elements pop, or stick to a monochromatic palette for a more cohesive feel.

Creating Scribble Papers is a liberating process that encourages experimentation and play. Each paper is a unique piece of art in itself, contributing to the story your collage tells. Embrace the unpredictability and let your creativity flow. As you build your collection of Scribble Papers, you’ll find endless ways to incorporate them into your collages, each piece adding a layer of originality and depth to your work.
